Apple to launch iPhone 7 with 256GB storage capacity and fast charging option

iPhone 7 may do away with 64GB storage option, won’t feature OLED display

A new forecast coming from analyst house TrendForce confirms recent reports that Apple is planning to offer a 256GB version of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models along with the 128GB storage option. Apple is expected to give up on the 64GB storage version. The report also reveals that the upcoming devices could feature 32GB of memory as their base models, thus getting rid of the 16GB version altogether.

Also, the display would not be a part of the upgrade line-up, so the one that’s currently available on the iPhone 6s will be offered on the next models, probably with small changes.

“The display of iPhone 7, however, will not feature a significant breakthrough. This also signifies that LTPS LCD has reached its peak in development and is unlikely to make another big technological leap in the future,” the analysts estimate.

The Plus model will come with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and this is very likely to be one of the features exclusively available on the 5.5-inch version. On the other hand, the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will come with 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM and will feature only a small camera update.

“The 5.5-inch iPhone 7 will be the first in series to have 3GB of memory in the form of four stacked 6GB mono-die modules. The additional memory is used to process the images taken from the dual-camera,” the report reads.

It also reiterates that Apple won’t include OLED displays this year, and will launch them in iPhones in 2017 or 2018. TrendForce also predicted no big change to the iPhone 7’s screen technology, a choice that would disappoint fans hoping for rich colours offered by AMOLED display technology. Also, previous leaks suggest a new, more powerful A10 processor and GPU SoC, and the omission of the 3.5mm audio jack. The upcoming iPhone is said to be 1mm slimmer, and house a Smart Connector at the back for connecting the Smart Keyboard cover or other device like charging docks.

While it is a well-known fact that MacBooks charge iPhones faster than a typical laptop, the leaked photos of the upcoming MacBook Pro line-up indicates that it would havea total of four USB-C ports, two on each side of the device. In other words, these ports available on the next-generation MacBook Pro can be used for charging, data transfers, external monitors and basically everything that involves external connectivity including iPhone charging.

Current Macs that come with USB 2.0 ports can produce 500 mA (Milliamps) at 5V, while a USB 3.0 port offers 900 mA at 5V. With these specifications, a MacBook with USB-C can charge the iPhone significantly faster, as the upcoming MacBook is coming only with USB-C ports.

The upcoming iPhone 7 will get rid of the USB and bring in Lightning cable and replace it with a USB-C to Lightning version that would allow users to charge their phones using the new MacBook’s USB-C ports.

Since the new MacBook Pro is expected to come with USB-C ports exclusively, it would meant that the iPhone 7 will not only get a new cable to connect to the laptop, but also benefit from the faster charging times offered by this new standard.

Google launches Android N Developer Preview 3 with seamless updates and VR mode

Google today launched the third release of the Android N developer preview, the first one to receive “beta-quality candidate” status. You can start testing your apps against this release by downloading the new preview from developer.android.com/preview. The factory images should arrive shortly for the supported devices: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus 9 LTE, Nexus Player, General Mobile 4G, and Pixel C.

Google launched the first Android N developer preview in March and the second preview in April. In past years, Google has unveiled the next Android version and released the accompanying developer preview at its I/O developer conference, but with Android N, the company is starting much earlier — we’re at I/O 2016 and the company is already on the third preview.

There are two big features the Android team is highlighting in the third preview: seamless updates (like in Chrome OS!) and VR mode. The third preview naturally includes everything that inside the first two previews, but these features are being shared for the first time today.

Seamless updates

Google says that seamless updates are “inspired by how Chromebooks apply updates.” In short, devices running Android N or greater can install system updates in the background. The next time you restart your Android phone or tablet, it will boot up using the updated system image.

Androind N will borrow the dual-partition setup from Chrome OS; the secondary system partition stays dormant and is updated as necessary. Whenever it receives an update, the secondary partition swaps with the primary partition to become active after a reboot. This could be problematic for existing devices already available, so the feature will likely be limited to devices that ship with Android N and above.

Seamless updates are a huge addition that will have massive implications on the Android ecosystem years down the road. The impact will be obvious in terms of security (Nexus and other Android devices already get monthly updates, but they’re not seamless) as well as for developers looking to use features only available on newer Android versions (it takes months for new Android versions to gain serious traction, meaning the most used version of Android is always outdated).

Still, we can’t get too excited. After all, we have to wait for Android N to gain some serious traction. Only then can the Android platform begin reaping the benefits of such a feature.

VR mode

We’ll be hearing more about virtual reality from Google tomorrow, but today is Android day. In short, the operating system is getting its own virtual reality upgrade. When a user launches an app in VR mode, the Android operating system recalibrates the device into a state specifically optimized for virtual reality.

Google says the team “worked at all levels of the Android stack in N — from how the operating system reads sensor data to how it sends pixels to the display — to make it especially built to provide high quality mobile VR experiences.” Developers will be happy to know that VR mode brings performance enhancements, including single buffer rendering and access to an exclusive CPU core.

VR mode lets apps take advantage of smooth head-tracking, stereo notifications, and low latency graphics. Google says this preview brings motion-to-photon latency on the Nexus 6P down to less than 20ms, which is “the speed necessary to establish immersion for the user to feel like they are actually in another place.”

In short, Google wants Android to be its virtual reality platform. Of course, we knew that was the case thanks to Google Cardboard’s success, but now the company is baking support and improvements right into its mobile operating system.

This is because the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus is rumored to feature 3GB of RAM. Though more amount of RAM will obviously equal more battery consumption, we have a feeling that Apple will reduce this drawback through a large battery capacity.

However, 3GB RAM is not the only impressive hardware spec that is going to be present inside the upcoming beast of an iPhone. iPhone 7 Plus has also been rumored to feature a dual-camera processing sensor, and if the rumor holds true, this iPhone is going to be the very first phone belonging to Apple to feature such a configuration.

While we do not know the true capabilities of this sensor, it will probably have to do with creating a final image that is going to be far more separated from the background compared to the other camera sensors. Android smartphones have featured dual-camera sensors before to create 3D images, so it is possible that an iPhone 7 Plus will provide such an addition too.

HMD Global plans investments topping $US500 million. Nokia won’t have a financial stake in the venture, though it’s set to collect fees from brand licensing and intellectual property.

“To shake up the market and offer something that excites the fickle market will be difficult.”

Nokia seeks to make the shoppers remember its rugged feature phones and a very recognised after sales backbone. The brand that almost disappeared from the shop counters with the sale of Nokia’s handset unit to Microsoft in 2014. Nokia, gets a risk-free second chance at a business  which is not ruled by Apple, Samsung, LG and HTC.

The attempt to revive Nokia phones and tablets comes almost two decades after Nokia, then the world’s largest smartphone maker, reached its highest valuation of almost $US250 billion. It is now worth around $US30 billion.

HMD is funded by a group of international private-equity backers through a fund called Smart Connect, as well as by HMD’s management team. The venture will be run by Arto Nummela, a former Nokia manager and current head of Microsoft’s Mobile Devices business for Asia, Middle East and Africa and its feature-phone business. The venture will make smartphones running Android, and also plans tablets and cheaper, so-called feature phones. FIH Mobile, part of Foxconn Technology Group, will help to build the devices.

Nokia and HMD wont have it easy because two years is a long time in the very dynamic mobile markets. With Samsung, Apple and Huawei Technologies dominating smartphone sales with about half of the total 334 million high-end phones shipped in the first quarter, Nokia has its future cut out.

The new venture also marks an exit from cheaper phones by Microsoft. As part of the arrangements announced Wednesday, Microsoft is selling its feature-phone assets to FIH and HMD.

Top 5 Hidden Tips and Features of Xiaomi Mi 5

Xiaomi’s Mi 5 is an amazing phone for the price and with all the latest hardware included, it is a serious contender to other flagships out there. But, great hardware does not a great phone make. The software plays an equally important role in the making of a perfect flagship smartphone with all the features and enhancements it brings in for the users to make the most out of the hardware.

1. Enable Permission Manager

The combo of Android Marshmallow and MIUI were making a mess out of my apps for the first few hours that I used the Mi 5. WhatsApp was not able to read contacts and Truecaller was not able to make calls or even show call history. What’s more annoying was that the apps were not prompting me to grant the permissions as they would normally do on a Marshmallow device. Even the option to manually grant the permission from app settings page was grayed out.

It took me a few hours to figure this out. The problem was caused by the built-in permission manager of MIUI which comes disabled by default for security reasons. To enable the permissions, open up the Security app, navigate to permission and you will see a small Settings icon on the top-right corner. Here enable the option Permission Manager and then you would be able to grant access permissions to the apps installed on Mi 5.

  

2. The Built-in Fingerprint App Lock

The Xiaomi Mi5 runs on Android Marshmallow and therefore most of the 3rd party Android fingerprint lock apps will work on the device. We even covered an app inone of our videos on our YouTube channel which showcased how apps could be locked using a fingerprint app locker. The app still works but it had some issues if it was killed in the background. However, after exploring the device for a few more days, I realized that the option comes as a built-in feature of MIUI on Mi 5 which is well-hidden deep inside the settings menu.

Just like Samsung, the Mi 5 also comes with the back and recent apps capacitive touch button along with a home button with a fingerprint sensor which needs to be pressed. But like me, if you don’t like the idea of pressing the home button, you can convert it to a capacitive touch button.

Under Settings—> Advanced Settings—> Button you will find the option that saysTap Home button to go back to Home screen. Just enable it to change the behavior of the home button. As the home button is raised a bit, you might have some issues with false touch in the first few days, but that will take care of itself.

Note: If you are using the fingerprint sensor to lock apps, you cannot use the home button as capacitive touch button. If you do, each time you unlock the app, you will be taken to the home screen.

4. Enable Reading Mode

It’s a proven fact that reading in orange light is healthier for eyes when compared to blue light and there are quite a few apps available to get the feature on almost any Android device. But for Mi 5 users, you just need to head over toDisplay settings and enable the option for Reading Mode. This will turn on the orange filter which is a great feature for all the reading buffs out there.

  

You also get the option to customize the reading mode for specific apps which makes it so much better than the 3rd party apps available on the Play Store.

5. Use a 3rd Party IR Remote App

Xiaomi Mi 5 has a pretty decent remote app for Mi 5 which has a wide variety of device catalog that the app supports. Still, if you live outside China there will be a few instances where you will find the device which you wish to configure missing from the list.

So to use the IR blaster to its full potential, I would suggest you install an app called Peal Remote. It will not only give you a wide variety of models to choose the form which includes TVs, set top boxes, sound bars, air conditioners and even get the option to configure a personal remote. The app also gives you a guide to what’s going on channels and you can tap on the program to fire up the channel.
